3 Seeds Mentoring Group, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating innovative and transformative experiences for young people, has been awarded a $20,000 donation from Nicor Gas. The organization was named Nicor Gas’s Nonprofit of the Year, an honor tied to the company’s annual charity golf outing hosted earlier this year by its African-American employee affinity group.

Funds raised during the golf outing were presented to 3 Seeds Mentoring Group on November 19th, during a special ceremony. This annual event, which gathers corporate sponsors to support impactful organizations, selected 3 Seeds for its dedication to providing meaningful programming and opportunities for students.

“Being selected for this honor means that people are noticing the work we’re doing, and they want to help us do more,” said Jason Thomas, of 3 Seeds Mentoring Group. “It’s incredible to see the community rally around our mission to provide unique opportunities for students to learn, grow, and succeed.”

The donation will support two major initiatives: the purchase of a sprinter vehicle to transport students and an investment in the organization’s podcast program, which offers hands-on media experience and stipends for student participants. “We’re building a podcast studio at Hillcrest High School, and this donation will bring us closer to making that a reality,” Thomas said.

For over eight years, 3 Seeds Mentoring has served students from Hillcrest High School and its feeder schools. The organization focuses on exposing students to new experiences, such as college visits, museum tours, and corporate interactions, helping them unlock their full potential.

“Our work would not be possible without the support of the Hillcrest administration, Thomas said. “Their commitment to providing space and resources has been crucial in making our programming successful.”
