Hillcrest High School’s partnership with The Morton Arboretum’s Chicago Region Trees Initiative (CRTI) and ArbNet is receiving recognition as an inspiring model for youth and community engagement in urban forestry.
Under the leadership of Mrs. Theresa Kelsey, members of Hillcrest High School’s Ecology Club took the lead in developing an accredited arboretum on the school’s campus. Mrs. Kelsey guided and supported students throughout the planning, planting, and accreditation process. Students helped shape the project, including the thoughtful selection of native tree species that benefit both the school and the surrounding community. Their work created a meaningful green space while providing hands-on opportunities to learn about conservation, environmental stewardship, and the importance of a healthy urban tree canopy.
Hillcrest’s story was recently featured during a Green City Rising panel at the Chicago Cultural Center. Green City Rising, an innovative urban-design concept developed by The Morton Arboretum, was selected as one of six finalists from nearly 200 submissions in World Business Chicago’s Horizon Lines: Visions for Chicago 2050 competition.
During the panel, representatives from The Morton Arboretum highlighted how Mrs. Kelsey, Hillcrest’s student-led Ecology Club, CRTI, and ArbNet worked together to create the school’s arboretum. The project was praised as a successful and replicable model for engaging young people in environmental work. Audience members responded enthusiastically, with one participant specifically recognizing Hillcrest’s approach as an excellent example of youth involvement with trees and the environment.
This recognition demonstrates how the leadership of Mrs. Kelsey and the efforts of Hillcrest students extend far beyond the school’s campus. The partnership, planning process, and student-led systems used to establish the arboretum are now helping inspire ideas for future community and urban forestry projects throughout the Chicago region.

The Hillcrest Boys Volleyball Program honored five outstanding seniors during last night’s matchup against Crete-Monee. Khadyous (KD) Gibson, Ahmeed Minter, Thomas Perez, Georgio (Jo Jo) McClown, and team manager Pamela Palacios have all been integral to the team’s success this season. Surrounded by family members, friends, teammates, and staff, they were celebrated before taking the court to face the Warriors.
The evening also highlighted the impact of several Hillcrest staff members. Each senior recognized a staff member who made a lasting difference in their high school experience, presenting them with a plaque and certificate. It was a meaningful way for the seniors to show appreciation for those who supported them not only on the court, but throughout their time at Hillcrest.
It was a memorable night filled with gratitude, celebration, and lasting memories for everyone involved.

Family & Friends Art Night at Hillcrest High School!
This event brought together students, families, and community members for an evening of creativity, connection, and hands-on art-making. Guests of all ages participated in interactive stations including canvas painting, mini sculptures, face painting, and collaborative drawing.
The goal of the event was to create an inviting and accessible space where families could engage in the arts together while celebrating the creativity happening within our school community. It was so wonderful to see students creating alongside parents, siblings, and community members! #hillcresthawkpride

Our Health Fair this year hosted by the Health Office was a huge success!
We had a total of 15 vendors to come to our school and give our students the best experience possible. The students were very engaged with our vendors and truly benefited from this event. We strive in helping our students learn about their health, access valuable resources, and feel supported by our staff.
Thank you to everyone who attended this event, helped in any way, and even volunteered their time! #hillcresthawkpride
