Hillcrest High School Special Education teacher, Theresa Kelsey, is being honored as one of the Illinois State Board of Education's "Those Who Excel" award recipients! We are so proud!!
The annual Those Who Excel & Teacher of the Year Awards celebrate incredible classroom teachers, administrators, teams, volunteers, and school support personnel who have made lasting impacts on the students, families, and fellow educators in their school communities.
“We are thrilled to receive the news that Theresa Kelsey has been recognized as a 2024 Those Who Excel Award winner,” said Hillcrest Principal Ron Towner. “Mrs. Kelsey continually goes above and beyond for the students of Hillcrest High School and she embodies what it means to be a Hawk. Her commitment to education and the impact she has made with our students is truly commendable. Congratulations Mrs. Kelsey!”
Kelsey began her teaching career 12 years ago in Blue Island, and has been a member of the Bremen High School District 228 family for the last eight years. She chose to become a special education teacher because her passion is to help students find their amazing abilities, and to help them believe in themselves.
“The fact that a parent could take five minutes out of their day to do something like this for me makes me so proud of myself, and makes me so proud to make her proud of our profession,” Kelsey said. “Hillcrest is such a good school, full of amazing teachers and great students. This award makes me feel as though we teachers come to work everyday and it doesn’t go unnoticed. It’s hard for a person to say that they are proud of themselves, but I am so proud of this profession and the work we do everyday.”

Varsity Girls basketball participated in Free-throws for Cancer donation for St. Jude Research Hospital. On Saturday February 17, 2024 the girls shot over 500 free-throws and raised $371.00. #hillcresthawkpride
Key Club had a great day doing some community outreach at the assisted living home down the street. We made Mardi Gras masks and ran BINGO for the residents. Our students were wonderful and we had so much fun! #hillcresthawkrpride
Business students had the opportunity to take a trip to the Auto Show. Students were exposed to sales pitches, promotional items, and different forms of advertisements. All these business characteristics lead to a final project where they create their own business and pitch it in "Shark Tank" style format. #hillcresthawkpride

Freshman Leadership students participated in the Orland Bridge Teen Center's "Lead U" workshop February 13th. They learned about how to build upon their skills and personality traits in order to lead and inspire others.
After the workshop and a nice lunch, students spent the final hour of the day sorting and hanging donated clothes and goods to be sold at the Center's Thrift Store.
Hillcrest leaders were able to empty 33 bags of clothing, which when sold for profit, can provide more than 6 months of free access to the Bridge Center for 1 student- way to go Hawks!!
